5 Halloween Survival Ideas When Struggling with Infertility
At RMA Long Island IVF, we don’t only provide assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like in vitro fertilization (IVF) services, we also support our patients through the emotional stress that accompanies infertility.
Success rates for infertility treatment continue to rise-- and with them the likelihood of resolving infertility through having a baby. Still, the uncertainty and lack of control over such a fundamental dream as having a baby can drive anxiety. And certain holidays can make things worse.
Take Halloween, for instance. While Christmas and Hanukkah may be child-focused holidays, they bring a broader family focus (as well as a religious observance) for many who celebrate. But Halloween is the one annual holiday that’s entirely about the little kids.
When you’re struggling with infertility, watching gangs of mini goblins roaming the streets can be difficult. Here are a few new and some tried-and-true ideas on how to survive Halloween if being home and answering the door doesn’t work for you:
- Leave a bowl of candy outside and don’t open the door. This avoidance technique is popular with everyone from infertile folks protecting
- their hearts to others who are either short on Halloween spirit or have other reasons to avoid opening the door repeatedly (like the elderly, the sick, or those with dogs). You’d be in good company with this choice.
- Go somewhere the trick-or-treaters won’t be. Consider an R-rated movie marathon or a nice, long romantic dinner date.
- Invite a friend or two over for a make-your-own caramel or candy apple gathering—or just indulge by yourself. Channel your inner child with apples, caramels, wooden sticks, and fixins to roll them in like chopped nuts chocolate, sprinkles, and candy. Wash it down with fresh apple cider or your favorite other drink;
- Celebrate a “Reverse” Halloween. Make up treat bags and deliver them to others who are lonely or less fortunate. Consider local nursing homes, homeless shelters, children’s hospitals. But call ahead for any guidelines or dietary or other restrictions;
- Get a head start on Thanksgiving by buying or baking fall-themed cookies and delivering some to people you’re thankful for-- especially those who may be supportive during your infertility journey.
