Get to Know Dr. Joseph Pena, REI at RMANY - Long Island
Joseph Peña, MD joined East Coast Fertility, the practice which would become RMA of New York – Long Island, in 2004. He received his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, the oldest hospital in the United States.
How did you get interested in medicine?
I entered college to pursue a career in engineering. However, during my sophomore year in college, I contracted Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a paralyzing autoimmune disorder. After six weeks in the ICU and then a year-long rehabilitation, I realized that I was drawn to the field of medicine. I realized I could use my attraction to problem solving on a more personal level in medicine.
What made you decide to become an REI?
After entering the field Obstetrics & Gynecology, I realized I wanted to subspecialize to further my education and skills. Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) seemed the ideal path for me as it provided the variety of both medicine and surgical procedures, as well as the continued involvement in a special and joyous part of my patients' lives - the start or expansion of their family.
What topics/areas of interest are you particularly passionate about?
I see a variety of cases in my practice, but I am particularly interested in the following clinical topics:
- infertility
- ovulation induction +/- intrauterine insemination
- fertility preservation
- oocyte cryopreservation (egg freezing)
- LGBTQ reproductive options
- preimplantation genetic testing
- PCOS
- recurrent pregnancy loss
How do you like to spend your free time?
Ideally, I try to maximize my time with family. With two children in college and post-graduate education, my wife and I try to spend time with them during their scheduled vacations, whether it be domestic, international, or simply at home. Exercise and physical activity balanced with more relaxing activities (streaming on TV, movies) occupy our time outside of work.
Anything else you want prospective patients to know about you?
Having been a patient myself, I know the importance of having a caring and competent physician. Just like medicine has changed the course of my life for the better, I would like to provide the same for my patients, to be able to help them start or expand their families in a safe and effective manner up to the current standards of our field.
