Get to Know Dr. Michael Zinger, REI at RMANY - Long Island

He takes great pride in helping build families through individualized, compassionate, and effective treatment and finds it essential to familiarize himself with each patient’s values and goals in order to ensure the correct treatment approach is utilized.
How did you get interested in medicine?
Since my parents were both physicians, I had been exposed to the field since childhood. Seeinng how rewarding it was for both of my parents made it seem like a natural choice. The choice was further solidified by my 9th grade biology teacher. He made biology so fascinating that I really developed a passion for the science that underlies medicine.
What made you decide to become an REI?
Endocrinology was one of my favorite classes in medical school. Understanding how hormones interact to regulate all the functions of life was fascinating to me. However, the medical aspect of endocrinology alone felt too one-sided. In reproductive endocrinology, I found the perfect blend of science with surgery. I also love that it still feels like a new field with the technology constantly evolving and improving. More recently, after having 3 children of our own, I have realized first-hand the stress and amazement of expanding our family, which makes what I do feel all the more fulfilling.
What topics/areas of interest are you particularly passionate about?
Although both genders contribute, women bear an outsized burden and role to play in reproduction. Yet at the same time, women have historically been limited in their own control of reproduction. I find it so important that we are able to empower women to have more control over their reproduction. This is true whether we are enabling women to overcome infertility or preserving their fertility in order to enhance their options to conceive later in life.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I like to spend my free time outdoors as much as possible with my wife, two daughters, son, and dog. Among our favorite activities are hiking, kayaking, and skiing.
Anything else you want prospective patients to know about you?
The main aspect of my professional role is to enable the building and expansion of families. But I believe that another aspect is to educate and empower my patients with knowledge about their reproductive concerns. So I would like to convey to prospective patients that I am happy to meet even to just provide testing and assessment of fertility and egg quality/supply. They should not feel that they need to be ready to start treatment when they come in to see me.
