Was Infertility a Horror on Halloween?
Halloween is associated with blood-curdling screams, hysterical wailing, and visions of the stuff nightmares are made of. In many ways, that’s another day in the life of infertile folks who live through horrific losses, devastating disappointments, and deep fear on a daily basis. Only Halloween can be even worse. Halloween can bring a special kind of pain to some. Did you feel it this year?
With every knock on the door and every ring of the doorbell comes the potential for a mini trauma. This Wednesday, those who’ve suffered the horror of losing a child were forced to face countless children, many the age their lost one would have been. Those undergoing fertility treatments may have found themselves wondering if next year will finally be the year they’ll be trick-or-treating with an infant in a peapod costume in a stroller. By the end of the day, the constant barrage of scary and adorable children of all ages takes a toll. Leaving a bowl of candy out so you don’t have to answer the door helps, but what if that’s not enough to protect you from the feelings of sadness that come hand in hand with the giggles and shrieks of excitement on the other side?
