Semen Analysis
Semen analysis involves collecting a semen sample (typically through masturbation or by using a special condom during intercourse) and evaluating its properties in a laboratory. The results of this test help fertility specialists diagnose male infertility issues and identify optimal treatment options. A semen analysis test measures:
- Sperm count: A healthy semen sample should contain at least 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen
- Sperm motility: At least 40% of the sperm in the sample should be motile, or able to move forward
- Sperm morphology: Approximately 60% of sperm in the sample should have a normal shape and size
- Semen volume: A healthy sperm sample should have a volume of at least 1.5 milliliters
Other factors that may be evaluated in a semen analysis include pH, viscosity, and the presence of white blood cells or other substances that may affect fertility.
